The current name of Department of Structural Mechanics was adopted in 1996. Its predecessor was founded in 1870, and the department has been continuously engaged in teaching basic subjects as well as special courses of doctoral school of civil engineering since then. In addition to teaching, the department also hosts several research projects that range from nonlinear dynamics (seismic analysis) through biomechanics (mechanical modelling of tissues) to optimal design of structures or structural topology.
