Our PhD students did well in the PhD Symposium of Tokyo

Primary tabs

Between the 29th and the 31st of August the International PhD Symposium in Civil Engineering 2016 took place at the University of Tokyo.

Report by Dr. György Balázs L.

PhD students and teachers/researchers taking part in the Symposium represented 68 universities from 4 continents. The total number of participants was 186. The BME Faculty of Civil Engineering was represented by 6 PhD students: Abdelkader El-Mir, Olivér Czoboly, Zoltán Gyurkó, Viktor Hlavicka, Sándor Sólyom with oral presentation and article and Lilla Mlinárik with poster presentation and article. I would like to say thank to all of them for their jobs.

The first aim of International PhD Symposium in Civil Engineering is giving an opportunity for PhD students to present and discuss the results of their research theme in an international event. In the programme of the Symposium the obligatory discussion time is almost as long as the presentations themselves (10 minutes). The Symposium is for those PhD students, who started their research but did not finished their thesis (until the deadline of the Abstract). The PhD Symposium ensures such a scientific-professional atmosphere, that gives a great opportunity for students to broaden their international relationships in their research fields.

The Proceeding of the Symposium and the Keynote presentations are available here.

In the past 11 years the following countries organized the Symposium: 1996 Budapest University of Technology (BME), 1998 Budapest University of Technology (BME), 2000 University of Applied Sciences, Vienna, Technical University of Münich and University of Federal Armed Forces Münich, 2004 Research School Structural Engineering and Delft University of Technology, 2006 ETH Zürich, 2008 Universität Stuttgart, 2010 Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, 2012 Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), 2014 Université Laval, Quebec City, 2016 The Tokyo University.

The symbol of the International PhD Symposium is always in the organizer country for the two years of the organization. The right of the organization of the International PhD Symposium 2018 is got by the Czech Technical University in Prague. I hope that many of our PhD students will represent BME in Prague too.
